Intelligent Systems for Urban Planning

Our Vision

The objective is to support the user-oriented design and development of innovative cities. Thereby, the needs and requirements of citizens are of crucial importance to develop solutions for the improvement of the quality of life and environment in a participative fashion!

The ongoing digitization of almost all areas of life has led to major changes in recent years and will continue to do so. Many changes and transformation processes are multi-layered, as different stakeholders are affected and the success of existing and new technologies poses numerous novel challenges and has to adapt to our needs. In addition, many potentials are not fully exploited until today and should be investigated concerning the development of smart cities.

Smart cities describe the cities of the future as sustainable, environmentally friendly, efficient, and connected by putting citizens at the center to address their needs and providing a high quality of life. The dimensions of smart cities are complex and are also described as smart mobility, smart people, smart economy, smart environment, smart government, and smart living.

Within the context of various projects with different partners from the urban area, we are researching how the city of tomorrow can be developed in a participatory and innovative way.

As part of scientific and student projects, prototypes are developed in a user-oriented environment, e. g. to support citizen participation or urban mobility, and are evaluated in practice. For this purpose, we use innovative technologies from the field of data science and machine learning and thereby contribute to the digitalization of cities.

IS 4 Smart Participation

Toward intelligent assistance Systems for the smart Utilization of Participation Data for Urban Planning and Design

The project IS 4 Smart Participation is focusing on the development of innovative approaches for the implementation of smart citizen participation. The findings are used to develop intelligent prototypes, using new technologies such as machine learning, which are then tested and evaluated via interviews and workshops.
D²S²C Hamburg

Data-driven Solutions for the Smart City Hamburg

In the teaching project D²S²C Hamburg , students have the opportunity to develop intelligent prototypes for urban challenges in groups together with cooperation partners from the economy and public service. This enables students to enhance their data literacy, establish contacts with companies, and expand their skills and capabilities in a practice-oriented manner.

Comments

The students familiarized themselves with the topic very quickly and produced good results, which can now be further optimized. The collaboration was goal-oriented and well organized. It is always a benefit to approach a subject with several ideas and approaches.

Citizen participation of growing interest and conducted in many cities to support demand-oriented and user-centered urban planning and design to solve local conflicts and increase the quality of life.
